Our Thanks To West Van LBC President Tim Mason
This year’s AGM felt like the end of a glorious era. Tim Mason has been our president for five years, on the board for six years and is now passing the torch.
Five years ago, he had a variety of goals: to make sure the club became a vibrant part of the community, to use technology, have a current website, be active on social media, attract provincial and national events, and basically ensure that the club is the best it could possibly be. When I joined five years ago, I thought he was a paid manager because he was there ALL the time. He did, in fact have a full time job, and a modicum of a private life, yet still found time to bowl extremely well.
In his years at the club he has chaired the 2016 Canadian Outdoor Singles Lawn Bowling Championships, 2013 Canadian Major Championships and the 2015 & 2016 Bowls BC Provincial Mixed Pairs Championship. The Mason Classic Charity Tournament reached its tenth year in 2017 and has benefited the YMCA, Canuck Place, and the Canadian Cancer Society; enabling over 3,000 children to go to summer camps.
He has hosted Beavers, Scouts, and Girl Guides and taken bowling into local schools, with the iLawn Bowl program that he established in 2014. We have such a strong tie with the District of West Vancouver that they help us with our grounds and the Mayor’s Charity Lawn Bowling Tournament has completed its fourth year.
Through his efforts and connections we made partnerships such as the one with the West Vancouver Community Foundation, whose donations have enabled us to hold Provincial and National events. He has also worked with local businesses garnering their sponsorship for these events; companies such as Save-On-Foods, Fresh St. Market, Starbucks, Howe Sound Brewery, Popeyes Supplements, LuLu Lemon, Ellison Travel, Cobs Bread Bakery to name a few.
Rentals have proven a necessary source of income, ranging from corporate functions, charity events, to business meetings and this year to three wedding receptions. The Weather Network, CTV, CBC, Vancouver Sun, Global, City TV, North Shore Outlook and The North Shore News all know about us, and we often make the Spotlight page of the latter. He has always volunteered to help on the greens, set up the greens, help in the kitchen, MC, host National team training camps, clear up after events, provide awards from his own pocket AND has managed to be the 2017 Indoor Pairs Gold Medalist, 2017 Indoor Triples Gold Medalist, 2017 Indoor Singles Silver Medalist, 2016 BC Pairs Champion, 2016 Canadian Pairs Bronze Medalist, 2015 BC Fours Champion, 2015 Canadian Bronze Medalist, 2015 BC Mixed Pairs Silver Medalist, 2014 Commonwealth Games Team – Glasgow, Scotland, 2014 BC Provincial Indoor Champion, 2014 Canadian Indoor Silver Medalist, Six time International Medalist representing Canada, Multiple Canadian Champion and Provincial Medalist, to representing Canada on four different continents! The Province and City have also recognized him with multiple athlete, volunteer and organizational awards over the years. Besides all of the above, if he is practising nearby and you ask him for some coaching, he is happy to share some of his significant experience.
So thank you Tim, thank you for devoting so much of your life to lawn bowling and in particular to this club. Thank you for ensuring that we are not only still here, but thriving and it is my hope that we can honour all your efforts by continuing to build on your firm foundations. Here’s hoping you can draw breath and enjoy a little less responsibility!
